सामान्य जानकारी -: 

  • कॉर्डेलाइन प्लांट एक सदाबहार फूलों वाला पौधा है। 
  • प्रशांत महासागर द्वीप समूह, न्यूजीलैंड द्वीप, दक्षिण पूर्व एशिया और पापुआ न्यू गिनी के लोगों के लिए यह पौधा बहुत सांस्कृतिक महत्व का है। 
  • कॉर्डेलाइन प्लांट खेती, भोजन, पारंपरिक चिकित्सा और इसके विभिन्न रंगो के पत्तो के कारण सजावटी पौधे के रूप में उपयोग किया जाता है। 
  • इसे विभिन्न प्रकार के स्थानीय नामों से जाना जाता है, जिनमें टी प्लांट, पाम लिली, Cabbage Tree और गुड लक प्लांट प्रमुख हैं।
  • यह अपने मूल निवास स्थान में 10 फीट तक के छोटे पेड़ या झाड़ी के रूप में पाया जाता है।
Edible Uses -:
  1. The root contains a high proportion of sugars. When baked, it has a flavour not unlike molasses and is eaten like this or used as a sweetener in puddings and other foods.
  2. The root is baked for up to four days in earthen ovens to be consumed as food, sweets, refreshment, or confectionery.
  3. The tuberous root can weigh 4.5 - 6.5 kilos. A fermented drink is make from the sweet roots.
  4. Young leaves are cooked and eaten as a potherb. 
  5. They are free of any pronounced flavor and can also be used to wrap around other foods whilst they are baked.

Medicinal Uses -: 

  1. An infusion of the leaves is used as a remedy for swellings, inflammations and for dry fevers.
  2. The juice of the leaves is used to treat colds and coughs, stomach-ache, eczema and gastritis.
  3.  An infusion of three crushed leaves of the purple cultivar is used to treat high blood pressure.
  4. The leaf buds are used to treat lower chest pains.
  5. Filariasis is treated with a solution made from the new plant shoots.
  6. Applied externally, the juice of the leaves is used to treat earache and infected eyes.
  7. An infusion of the leaves in oil is used to treat wounds.
  8. The leaves are crushed with oil and applied to abscesses of the gums.
  9. The lower portion of the leaf is macerated in olive oil and used as a cataplasm or tampon for treating wounds.
  10. Liquid from the stem is used to treat sickness after childbirth and also to help expel the afterbirth.
  11. The root is used to treat inflammations, baldness, toothache and laryngitis. Pieces of the root, soaked in vinegar, are used to make a preparation against bleeding.
